ABOUT THE AUTHOR
BEVERLEY TASKER

"Religion," writes Beverley Tasker, "is not simply about going to church or attending the temple or synagogue. That is only a fraction of the story. Indeed it can be most misleading. Religion is the discovery that each of us is, or has, something unique, something stupendous - a soul. This soul is related to everything else, to infinity in fact."

The relation, Beverley believes, can be reduced to a logical formula: I - Other, or I - not-I. "Reality, the Infinite, is not to be identified with the I alone, nor with the Other. It consists of both together." Thus, in turn, science and religion cannot be separated. "The relation between science and religion is not a problem at all. For it is rather like the surface of the sea and its depths. There is a difference between them, of course, as any oceanologist will tell you, but it is still the same sea. It is just that the sea is bigger than its surface."

Beverley was a member of the priesthood for some years, retiring recently. Before that he served for a time with the Royal Air Force in the secret world of electronic warfare. But even at the height of the cold war, when the world was virtually on a war footing, he experienced some delicious moments of religious insight. Once, standing alone in the desert under the stars, listening to extra-galactic noise on his receiving equipment, he was filled with the sheer immensity of it all. "In a way, I was actually listening, and looking outwards, to the origins of the universe, while the world was preparing to destroy itself in nuclear conflagration. The awesomeness of this has been with me ever since. What a fleeting glimpse of life we have in this world, and how narrowly we define it!"
